About Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation

Qalipu First Nation is a Mi'kmaq First Nation in Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland), made up of 67 traditional Mi'kmaq communities across the island.

Qalipu (pronounced "holly-boo") means caribou in Mi'kmaq. The name suits a band that does not manage reserve lands, because the ancestors lived a way of life much like the caribou. Qalipu is part of the Mi'kmaq Nation, whose territory reaches from Maine to Quebec, through the Maritime Provinces and into Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland). The band is made up of 67 traditional Mi'kmaq communities spread over nine electoral wards.

Newfoundland's Mi'kmaq were left out of the Indian Act when the province joined Canada in 1949. In 1989, the Federation of Newfoundland Indians took the federal government to court to seek recognition, and that case led to a 2008 agreement. Qalipu First Nation was created by an Order in Council on September 22, 2011. Since then it has joined the Assembly of First Nations and the Atlantic Policy Congress, and in 2019 it was accepted by the Mi'kmaq Grand Council.

The Nation works to bring the core values of ancestral Mi'kmaw spirituality into today's world. It describes its approach as spiritual, accountable, professional and progressive. Language is one of the things the community lost over time, and members are now working to relearn Mi'kmaq.

The main office is in Corner Brook, and there are satellite offices in Glenwood, Grand Falls-Windsor, St. George's and Stephenville. Services include:

  • Education and training
  • Health benefits and services
  • Employment and training programs
  • Registration assistance
  • Tourism development
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Culture and heritage

Business development is run by the Qalipu Development Corporation, a separate company at arm's length from the band. You can find more at qalipu.ca.
